A fantasy film like no other.

Starring: Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Sangster

Plot: Based on the young adult novel of the same name by James Dashner, this sci-fi thriller centres on teenager Thomas who wakes to find himself without any memory of his past in a place called The Glade, the centre of a giant maze inside of which live vicious creatures called Grievers. The Glade is inhabited by other teenage boys, all of whom have no memory of their previous life, and who, as a group are working to engineer an escape. Periodically the doors to the maze open allowing the boys inside, but they also close without warning and no boy who has ventured inside has ever survived a night in the maze. But everything begins to change when the latest arrival turns out to be a girl whose thoughts Thomas can read. Together, they form a special bond and, along with the other boys, they launch a desperate bid for freedom.

Remarks: This is one of the greatest fantasy films released this year. Sure, the story has hints of Divergent and The Hunger Games in it but the producers managed to come up with something that has topped them both. The story is interesting and you find yourself engrossed and wanting to find out more as the film progresses. Dylan is a fantastic actor. You may remember him from Teen Wolf, where he plays Stiles, but he has finally come into his own in this film and it could be the start of a great career for him. The film also features Thomas Sangster (Game of Thrones) and Will Pouter (We’re The Millers) and it’s great to see young people getting bigger and bigger roles. The film has many twists and turns making it rather unpredictable – especially the epic ending. If there’s one film you should see this week, it should definitely be The Maze Runner.

Rating: 4/5

The Maze Runner releases on September 26th, 2014.
