Here they are!! My Top 5 favourite singles to come out of 2014! This does not include local music as I will have a post for that in the next few days.
5. Taylor Swift – Blank Space
So it took me a while to warm up to Taylor Swift’s new sound on ‘Shake It Off’ but when she released ‘Blank Space’, I was instantly sold. The whole song just works and one of the best pop songs of the year by far. The story the song tells is cute and Taylor uses her lyrics cleverly on the track.
4. Beyonce – ***Flawless (Feat. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie or Nicki Minaj)
There must have been a bit of Beyonce on this list, right? While ‘Partition’ had everyone lose their minds this year, it was the Nicki Minaj remix of ‘***Flawless’ that really stood out for me. I do think that Beyonce has had an incredibly overrated year, but this song if magic. The energy Queen B had with Nicki Minaj on the track is powerful and although it didn’t do too well on the charts, I had this track on repeat!
3. Maroon 5 – Maps
Maroon 5 had a pretty decent year. Their new album ‘V’ is selling quite well and they’ve proven they still have what it takes. The lead single off their latest record, ‘Maps’, was also a track that hit me hard on first listen. Despite this, the track continued to grow on me.
2. Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj – Bang Bang
This has got to be the most epic collaboration of 2014. Three of the hottest faces in music all on one song and man, do they smash it! The vocals are pure fire, the track is catchy as hell and Nicki’s rap is one of her best. No wonder this became such a huge hit.
1. Mr Probz – Waves (Robin Schulz Radio Edit)
What an absolutely perfect tune. Although released back in February, Mr Probz’s ‘Waves’ managed to keep momentum throughout the whole year and I’m sure it’s still a huge summer tune on beaches all around the country. The track was something so different and I connected with it instantly. There’s no doubt that this has been my number one song of the year.
