She’s back! We haven’t had any new solo music from Lady Gaga since she dropped ‘ARTPOP’ back in 2013. The singer was hard at work filming American Horror Story and promoting her ‘Cheek To Cheek’ – her collaborative album with Tony Bennett. However, she has spent the last few months working on her highly anticipated fourth studio album and has officially dropped the album’s lead single ‘Perfect Illusion’.
The track sees Gaga changing direction a little bit as she brings a rock flair to her signature dance sound. I’m glad that the song sounds so different from what we’ve heard from her before. Not only does it keep it exciting, but it shows growth and artistic expression. That being said, I do think this will take a while to grow on Gaga fans. Gaga sounds better than ever on the song. I love the emotion in her vocal this time around and it’s the first time in a while I’m excited about new music from the star.
Lyrically, the song hints at the star’s recent break-up to long-term boyfriend Taylor Kinney. Gaga sings “It wasn’t love, it wasn’t love, it was a perfect illusion”. Lady Gaga reveals that “The song is about modern ecstasy… We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it”. I think it’s a lovely first single and I’m stoked for album number four!
