She is taking the local pop space by storm! This year, she released the smash hits ‘Falling’, ‘Invisible’ and ‘Only High With You’ while dropping a brand new EP. Now, Cara Frew is working on a brand new album in the states while performing in all four corners of the world. This week, I sit with the star and discuss her hit single ‘Invisible’, her EP and her rise in popularity.
2016 has been good to you so far! You’ve had three major singles and your fan base is growing by the day. How has the ride been so far?
This year has been amazing thus far, with 2 successful radio singles, sharing the stage with Black Coffee at Ultra Miami, successful Croatian summer tour and now prepping for Ultra Singapore, where I’ve been booked to perform on the live stage. The line-up includes Seal, someone who I’ve always been inspired by.
‘Invisible’ has been a huge hit on radio and has charted on radio charts for weeks on end. What inspired the song?
Inspiration was drawn from a past relationship where I felt like I was invisible, unheard, unnoticed, undesired and unwanted. I like to draw from personal experiences, it’s a kind of therapy for me and it’s something I can really connect with and tell the story while singing.
Why do you think so many people have taken to the song so positively?
I think that people have taken to the song so positively because it has a great danceable beat and everybody loves to dance. I also think that the lyrics speak about something most people I meet have been through so it’s really relatable.
You’ve also released an EP recently. Tell us a bit about that.
The EP I released was one I wrote in LA with Dan Heath, who produced Young & Beautiful and Blue Jeans for Lana Del Rey and Stephan Skarbek, who wrote with Amy Winehouse up until her passing. I wanted to create something with real emotion, film score type production, It’s definitely more easy listening rather than commercial radio but it’s something I really wanted to do.
You’ve been spending a lot of time in the States. What have you been getting up to that side?
I am currently working on my album in the States so am back and forth frequently in between gigs. I plan to release it after February next year and am so excited about the new material as I feel like I am constantly growing and learning and it shows in my work, I can’t wait to share it!
The past few months have seen you perform shows in many places around the world. What has the touring experience been like?
Touring is very tiring most of the time but in these moments I remind myself just how very lucky I am to be able to do what I love every single day of the year. I work hard to get these opportunities and so I have an obligation to keep bettering myself so that I’ll get booked back again and again. Traveling is incredible as I get exposed to new talent and share stages with amazing artists from who I learn.
Are there any local or international acts you would love to work with?
In terms of collaborations, locally I’d love to collaborate with Sketchy Bongo, Tresor and Casper Nyovest to name but a few and internationally I’d absolutely would love to collaborate with Flume, Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding and Madonna.
