If, like me, you were an avid follower of The X Factor UK, you would have already known that Matt Terry beat out Finnish star Saara Aalto and became the winner of the show’s 13th season. To celebrate, Matt dropped his highly-anticipated winner’s single ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ as he gets ready to start work on his debut album which is scheduled for release next year.
Releasing a Christmas single is a smart choice. Releasing a song directly after a reality show finale satisfies the fans who have been voting all season long but releasing a Christmas single elevates the pressure to release a full record as soon as possible. ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ is a beautiful ballad written by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge and is a perfect song for Matt to showcase his crisp vocal and strong falsetto. What’s even greater is that proceeds from downloads and streams of the song will go to children’s charities Together for Short Lives and Shooting Star Chase.
The song is also a different move for The X Factor as it is both an original and a Christmas song. “I think it was such a good move. I can’t thank them enough for doing that for me. It’s just amazing and I feel so lucky,” Matt said on the decision to change things up this year. “I’m so privileged that this is my first single. I’m so happy that it’s Christmassy as it is so relevant.” Although winning The X Factor only a few short days ago, Matt is already planning the sound of his debut album. “I think it will definitely be mid-ballads. Think Jessie Ware, Grace, Sia, that kind of feel. But at the same time, I’m still learning and I’m so open to new ideas and influences that might come my way,” he says. I love this song and can’t wait to see what he cooks up in the studio.
