Review: Why Him?
2.5Overall Score

A story which will make you feel better about your son-in-law.

Starring: James Franco and Bryan Cranston

Plot: Over the holidays, Ned, an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird. A rivalry develops, and Ned”s panic level goes through the roof when he finds himself lost in this glamorous high-tech world and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

Remarks: There hasn’t been a great comedy on the big screen for a while besides the hilarious Office Christmas Party but Why Him? has definitely filled the gap. It’s one of those comedies you watch to escape every day life and guaranteed to give you a few laughs but is completely ridiculous. If you’re looking for a clever comedy with a message you can take home – this isn’t for you. However, if you’re a fan of mindless comedic films, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. The film tells a simple story of a father’s little girl who introduces him to her crazy, rich boyfriend who then asks for permission to marry her.

The film was cast perfectly. James Franco portrays crazy perfectly and really owns his character while Bryan Cranston does a great job portraying a worried dad. Their chemistry is hilarious and their relationship is really interesting to watch as the movie goes on.

The film has some hilarious moments but does rely on crass jokes to make an impact – which is rather unfortunate. Despite this, Why Him? does the job. It’s an easy watch and you’ll be laughing throughout the entire thing. I love watching a mindless comedy every now and again and if you enjoy it too, you should definitely watch this film this weekend.

Rating: 2.5/5
