The Blue Man Group have made a name for themselves as the ultimate entertainment show. The production has been called a comedy, art, theatre, rock concert and dance party all rolled into one and it’s the perfect way to describe the phenomenon. The show is on now at The Teatro in Montecasino and, naturally, there are a few hits and misses.

The characters in the show are fantastic. They are so quirky, funny and full of entertainment value. The concept is amazing and the three men give one hell of a show. For an hour and a half, the guys are up and down giving their all – and the passion shows. Naturally, their make-up needs to be spectacular. Sure, there’s something creepy about the bald men with no ears, but one also can’t keep their eyes off them.

The skits are done with absolutely no dialogue and, to be honest, it works. The characters are hilarious in their actions and manage to tell a story with their bodies. They do this in the most unique way and you can’t help but smiling throughout the show.

The production is an artistic one. It’s a bit different, bizarre and unordinary but that’s what makes it special. I loved the percussion element. The three men played music on pipes and drums (filled with luminous paint) and had the audience eating out of the palm of their hands. The audience interaction in the show was also a spectcular addition. Audience members form an integral part of various skits and the results are hilarious! Oh, and can we talk about the epic celebration at the end?

There were moments, however, when I felt the skits didn’t flow from one another. There were moments when the production felt messy, confusing and bizarre. I also felt that there was a lack of direction with regards to the overall show. I left unable to explain exactly what I just watched. Luckily, the cast is so entertaining that it’s easily overlooked and enjoyed.

The show is a must-watch. There is a reason it’s so popular around the world and you would be doing yourself a massive disservice if you miss it. The show has just extended it’s Johannesburg run until the 12th of March before opening in Cape Town on the 21st of March. Book your tickets today!
