Popular 5FM personality, DJ Fresh, announced in a shocking move on Friday that he will leave the station after 10 years to head up a new, original breakfast show on 5FM’s sister station Metro FM from Monday the 3rd of April 2017. The DJ, who started off as the host of The Fresh Drive before moving to the breakfast slot on Fresh@5 was told about the news on Thursday, March 30th, and had only three days to create a brand new show.
In a Facebook video, the DJ admits that he has been a fan of Metro FM for the past 30 years. Fresh, visibly shaken by the adjustment in his professional career, thanked every one of his 5FM listeners over the years adding that he is excited for the new chapter.
5FM’s Marketing Manager and acting Station Manager, Liesl Hefkie, says the relationship between Metro FM and 5FM has always been a mutually beneficial one that sees the two commercial powerhouses of the SABC share audiences and ideas that offer clients an unparalleled audience footprint. The move for Fresh to Metro FM has been a long-term plan for the two brands. “We wish Fresh all the best and thank him for the incredible service and commitment to 5FM over the years,” she said.
The move, however, seems like a sudden one as 5FM are yet to replace the Big Dawg. In a press release, the station said that “5FM is excited at the prospect of putting together a new breakfast show that caters for the ever-changing and exciting new nature of the audio media landscape.” The new show will launch on 1 May 2017.
DJ Fresh has done amazing things over at 5FM over the past decade and I’m very excited to see what the move to Metro FM does for his career. One thing is for sure – we can expect a whole lot of amazing things from one of the greatest broadcasters in South Africa today.
