Best. News. Ever! After opening to a fantastic response in Cape Town last year, local ice cream sandwich makers, Crumbs & Cream, have officially (read: finally) expanded to Johannesburg as they officially open their first store in the city. Naturally, the brand has been welcomed with open arms with many rushing to their store in Illovo Junction to get a taste of the new phenomenon.
Funnily enough, the brand has an interesting and inspiring story behind it. What started out as a food truck at the V&A Waterfront was met with such a positive and massive demand that owners Shahar and Or Peled opened up the brand’s first store in Regent Road, Sea Point. However, the demand in Johannesburg was too great to ignore that the sisters quickly put a plan in motion to open up a store in the city of gold.
The concept is really simple – which is why it works. First, customers choose their cookie (and are encouraged to try two different types instead of playing it safe). The brand has a variety of flavours which will make this decision process rather difficult. I was a big fan of the rainbow and chocolate chip cookies but the brownie and Oreo ones came in at a close second. After deciding which cookies you’re going to enjoy, you pick your ice cream. Naturally, the brand has a variety of flavours to choose from (don’t worry – you can ask for a taste). After making your decision, you can spice it up a bit by adding spreads (Nutella, peanut butter etc.) and some toppings (marshmallows, sprinkles, cookie crumble and more). Everything is then put together and voila – the ice cream sandwich is ready for you to enjoy.
What I really liked about the brand (and something that is so important these days) is that they have ‘healthier’ versions of their creations as well. You can opt for a coconut-based banting-friendly cookie instead of the regular ones and there is a delicious sugar-free ice cream that will blow you away (although it is sweetened with xylitol). Also, for those who are gluten intolerant, there is a sorbet option as well.
The results are amazing! While it is a little difficult to eat (I used a spoon to eat my ice cream and had a bite of the cookies as I was devouring my creation), the ice cream sandwich was delicious and totally worth the hype.
If you want to try these ice cream sandwiches for yourself, head over to the new Crumbs & Cream store in Illovo Junction today. At an average price of R38, it’s definitely a treat you’ll thank yourself for.
