Zakes Bantwini is back! The new father has just dropped his new single ‘My No.1’ and it’s something both unexpected and unique. In fact, the song was met with such a fantastic response that it shot up to the top of the South African iTunes charts. The song is the next single off his fourth studio album ‘LOVE, LIGHT & MUSIC 2’, a sequel to the classic Love, Light & Music album, which started his solo career and, judging by the sound of this track, fans are in for a treat.

The song has a strong house and salsa influence full of maracas, subtle beats and brass. While the sound is a bit of an unconventional direction for the star to take, it’s something refreshing and shows off his incredible ability to diversify himself. The song still has a strong African flavour which is why the song has been so successful in such a short space of time. The song was produced by the renowned Themba Sekowe known by his stage name DJ Maphorisa, who used the many instruments on the song to highlight the message and feeling Zakes was trying to portray on the single. Lyrically, while the chorus is a little repetitive, Zakes captivates his audience with this love song and has delivered the comeback single that reminds us just how much we’ve missed him.

It’s always great seeing artists step out of their comfort zone. While it may be a risky, it’s these risks that show just how talented these musicians are. “You will understand why it took four years since my last release to finally decide on releasing the album, it’s been a working progress and its truly a reflection of what love, light and music is,” Zakes says on the single. ‘My No.1 is available on all major digital platforms now and LOVE, LIGHT & MUSIC 2 drops everywhere on the 26th of May.
