Today, two of South Africa’s biggest festivals, Rocking The Daisies and Oppikoppi, announced that they will be working together to secure world-class headliners which will be shared by the respective festivals. This means OppiKoppi will be taking place on the same weekend as Rocking The Daisies (5-8 October). While the different festivals occur in different provinces, the decision is a clever one, however, many festival goers attend both which will be impossible this year.

Meanwhile, Oppikoppi has announced their official 2017 theme – Me Now, The Mango Picker. The theme is inspired by a strangely beautiful tune by Carlo Mombelli. “The song was born when I was living in Germany in the 90’s teaching at the conservatory in Munich. My wife and I missed home and wanted to get back and finally I felt that the Mangos were ripe and Me the Mango Picker needed to go home to taste them. That we did in 98 and it was the best thing we ever did. It’s just a simple song but somehow it has now been recorded in New York, in Belgium, and last year someone in Paris recorded it and at the 2015 Montreux fest jazz academy they picked that song to workshop together with Al Jarreau. So basically it’s a positive song about tasting the fruits of South Africa and the beautiful place we live in!” Carlo says.

Meanwhile, the artwork used in the festival’s promotion is by Banele Khoza. The artist was born in 1994 in Hlatikulu, Swaziland before moving to South Africa in 2008. He then enrolled at the London International School of Fashion for a year, studying Fashion Design. Khoza returned in 2012 and started studying Fine Arts at Tshwane University of Technology. Tickets for Oppikoppi are officially on sale and can be purchased at Plankton.mobi.

It’s the first time in the history of SA where two promoters will work together on this scale, to create explosive experiences, regardless of which event fans choose to attend. The combined attendance at both festivals is expected to reach 45 000, as fans descend on Darling and Northam for two of SA’s biggest music and lifestyle festivals.
