She stole the hearts of thousands around the country on Idols South Africa last year and ultimately went on to win the show. Now, Noma Khumalo has just released her new album ‘Joy’ which features the hits ‘Want It To Feel Like It Did With You’ and the Sketchy Bongo-assisted ‘Moving On’. Now, the singer opens up about her Idols journey, her new single and what her plans are going forward.

Congrats on winning Idols South Africa! What went through your head the moment your name was announced as the winner?

The moment my name was announced I felt like I was under water. I could not hear what Proverb was saying. I only clicked when everyone ran towards Thami and I and my good friend Valentine said to me “Noma, he called your name”.

Why do you think so many people around the country identified with you and your music during your time on the show?

I think a lot of people in the country could identify with me and the music that I sung during the show because most of the music I chose was music that people could relate to and have a connection with. I chose songs that spoke to those who had either been through something or knew someone who could have been through a similar thing.

A show like Idols is almost like a crash-course into the industry. What’s the biggest lesson the show has taught you?

I work well under pressure. I also learned that anything is possible and that giving up is not an option.

Why do you think a show like Idols is so popular?

The show allows the ordinary person to change their lives through the support of the country. I think people love it because the show allows for the viewer to have that personal interaction with the vocalists in the show. They allow the viewer to interact with their votes and decide on what they as the viewers want to see happen – which I think is beautiful. It is also successful because of the team that works behind the scenes.

You recorded and released your album just over a month after winning the show. Why the rush?

I think it became a mandatory thing to do after Idols because in previous seasons we had people ask why the winners take long to release their music. We wanted the fans to hear the music they’ve been waiting for as soon as possible. It was a way to say thank you.

You worked with Sketchy Bongo on your new single ‘Moving On’. What was it like working with him?

Working with Sketchy Bongo was an absolutely amazing experience. He has been an amazing mentor in studio and the experience has been absolutely mind-blowing. I still have flashbacks to writing the song in studio with Kyle Deutsch and putting it together with Sketchy. It was a dream come true.

The song is beautiful. What makes it the perfect single?

I think many people can relate to it because the song is about my home town, where I grew up and a little bit about a past relationship. It is something listeners are able to relate to and draw inspiration from.

Now that the album is out, what can we expect from you in the months to come?

I’m looking forward to bringing my music to the fans with some live performances around the country.
