He was a worldwide phenomenon back in the late 1990s when he released his self-titled debut album followed by ‘Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)’ back in 2000. Now, 17 years since he released the popular album, the singer has just released his brand new EP ‘LøVë’ and he is back with a bang! Featuring the hit singles ‘Fool’s Gold’ and ‘Sooner Or Later’, the album, written and produced by Aaron, sees the star finding himself musically once again. It’s the comeback we’ve all been waiting for and this week, I chat to the singer exclusively about his new EP, his return to the spotlight and his relationship with his fans.
It’s been close to two decades since you released a body of work. What makes now the perfect time?
Now, I’m ready! I’ve spent enough time trying to perfect my craft and work on my creations and now, I feel like I’m in a good place creatively to share my music with the world.
Your sonic direction has changed to a more electronic, dance-inspired sound. What drew you to that genre?
I have always really loved this genre of music. I love producing and making it so it just felt like the perfect fit to explore that genre with my new music. I love the vibe and I put my own creative spin on it which makes it very original for me.
You released ‘Fools Gold’ last year and it received a great response. Why was that the perfect comeback single?
‘Fools Gold’ was a reintroduction to me and what I’ve been experimenting with in studio. This single sparked interest from my fans and Sony Music. It has opened a lot of doors for me.
Your new single ‘Sooner Or Later’ is climbing up the charts. What inspired that song?
It was about a bad relationship that I was in and I think it’s a song that so many people will be able to relate to.
What was the most nerve-wrecking thing about making your comeback?
I think it was that urge to see the number of plays and spins of my songs increase and to see if the radio would pick up my music – especially since I have been away for so long. Everything is going really well so I’m excited to be back.
Your new EP ‘Love’ is out now. How did you go about picking the five tracks that made the album?
It was a long process deciding on the five songs that made the final cut. My team and I worked hard on this aspect. Essentially, they are my stories and are about things that have happened in my life. So, all of them are meaningful and special to me.
You’re incredibly interactive with your fans on social media. How important is it having that support system as an artist?
It’s awesome! Social media is a new thing for me because I didn’t grow up with it. It’s definitely a new experience for me and I love the interaction I am able to have with my fans around the world.
You’ve been in the entertainment industry for 20 years now. What’s the one thing you know now that you wish you knew back then?
I don’t really look at life like that. Everything is a learning experience and life is essentially about growth so I’m happy that I have learned from my lessons in the past.
You’ve got many fans out here in South Africa. Is there a special message you would like to share with them?
I love the music out in South Africa – especially Locnville and Die Antwoord. I have so much love for my fans there and I can’t wait to come out and meet you all soon.
