2017 has been good to Jason Derulo. ‘Swalla’, the Caribbean-infused pop track which featured Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign on vocals, became one of the most streamed songs of the year. Now, after a fantastic run on charts around the world, Jason has released ‘If I’m Lucky’ the next single off his upcoming album ‘777’.
The star shows off his more emotional side as he croons about finding closure after a break-up while the feelings are still raw. Much like ‘Swalla’, Derulo steps out of his comfort zone as he mixes traditional Spanish influences into his signature pop sound – a mix that captures one’s attention from the very first beat. Pop has always been a genre in which Derulo thrives in and ‘If I’m Lucky’ is expected to be another hit for the star.
“It comes from past relationships that you think most things are good, but for some reason or another, things just don’t work out,” the star says to Billboard when asked what inspired the track. “They’re someone who are really compatible for you but for some reason it just doesn’t work. Hopefully that situation can pan out in the next life.”
Meanwhile, the star also dropped the official lyric video to the track and seems to be heavily inspired by Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. Much like the King of Pop’s iconic video, Jason appears to be a zombie while performing some killer dance moves. The release of ‘Swalla’ and ‘If I’m Lucky’ hints that Derulo’s upcoming album will be eclectic, unpredictable and full of hits. We’re ready for this new era!
