Craig Lucas won The Voice South Africa just a few short weeks ago but he’s been hard at work creating his debut album. His debut single ‘I Said This’ received a warm welcome on radio stations across the country and now, the star has released ‘Smother’ – the second single off his upcoming album ‘Restless’.
The song was written alongside former FOUR member Jethro Tait and was one of the easiest songs the star wrote for the new album. Jethro played Craig a guitar riff and spoke about an idea he had revolving around the concept of being smothered. Melodies and lyrics started pouring out of them and they finished the track within 45 minutes. The song is something a little different from ‘I Said This’ but continues to showcase Craig’s striking vocals beautifully. The song is a bit darker than what we expected from the star but it works.
“The inspiration behind the single stems from being so in love with someone, that you ignore that fact that they are hurting you,” Craig explains. “It comes from being in a toxic relationship, when you build your life around someone and you are willing to accept all the shit as long as you can be with the person. The person in the song is so deep in that he is willing to put up with being cheated on and being treated badly as long as he can be with his love.”
Ballads are always a risky release but ‘Smother’ is a song Craig really believes in. “‘Smother’ is one of my favourite tracks from the new album. I love performing it live,” Craig exclaims. “I am happy that a track that I wrote is a single. This is the kind of music I would listen to. I am very excited about it being the 2nd single so that people can see this darker more alternative side of me.” Craig proves there’s more to him than we thought with the release of his single and we have a feeling ‘Restless’ is going to take us on a musical journey.
