In a nail-biting finale, Idols South Africa crowned 17-year-old Paxton Fielies as its season 13 winner. The star brought show-stopping performances week after week and impressed judges and viewers with her beautiful voice and wonderful control. She beat out 25-year-old Mthokozisi Ndaba from Durban who also became a fan-favourite throughout the course of the competition.
Although there has been some controversy around the song, the track serves as great introduction to the young star. It’s full of attitude and showcases her vocals beautifully. The pop track is unlike any pop record in the country at the moment which helps set the star apart. The video is beautifully shot and compliments the track beautifully. The sound is edgy and colourful yet relatable and I have no doubt it’ll do incredibly well for the star. In fact, the video has already racked up 37 000 views in just two days!
Life has changed a lot for Paxton over the year. She risked her Grade 11 year to appear in the singing competition – something that paid off in the end. “It was a risk worth taking. But I intend completing my studies while doing gigs and shows. My goal is to make it internationally,” the star tells us reassuring the country that she has not given up on her studies. “I will definitely complete my studies, whether it be through correspondence, online or home schooling. I don’t think I will be able to go to school with all the gigs or shows happening. For me, this is very important. I will need to manage my time to finish my studies.” Paxton will head into the studio to record her debut album in January which will be released under Gallo Records. The star assures fans that she will bring her all on her upcoming album and is excited for the next chapter in her career to begin.
