We as South Africans are used to biting the bullet and dealing with many of the crazy things that happen here. A corrupt president, a huge crime rate, poor currency and corruption isn’t something that shocks us. But, we stick together through the bad and the good and nothing made us prouder today than witnessing Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters being crowned Miss Universe at the annual event which was held in Las Vegas earlier this morning.

A staggering 92 contestants battled it out for the crown this year before our precious beauty stole the hearts of the public and judges. Demi rocked every aspect of the competition from the swimsuit round to “final look” and those terrifying Q&A sessions. Demi-Leigh had a turbulent start to her reign as Miss South Africa as she was hijacked a month after she was crowned. However, the way she dealt with the trauma and starting a self-defence program for young women in South Africa inspired the world.

Demi will embark on a variety of duties as Miss Universe and will most likely be moving to New York where the pageant will house her in a swanky apartment. However, now that the winner will be unable to perform her Miss South Africa duties, runner-up Adé van Heerden will officially take over the title.

We’re so proud of Demi and we wish her the most successful reign going forward.
