Elton John’s ‘Rocket Hour’ show is one of the most popular segments on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio platform and tonight, the massive superstar chats to our very own Nakhane. Elton talks to the star about growing up as a black gay man in South Africa, with Nakhane saying “as much as our constitution in South Africa is really liberal, the real world is a different place sometimes. I’ve had to kick down some doors yeah.”
The two also talk about Nakhane’s musical influences, and how Marvin Gaye’s album ‘Here, my Dear’ influenced him as a child. They both go on to talk about sitting on their bedroom floors as kids and listening to records. The duo also discuss Elton visiting South Africa, and the EJ Aids Foundation work there. Elton talks about visiting Judge Edwin Cameron who made it possible for gay people to get married in South Africa. “I love Africa, it’s in my heart, and especially South Africa”.
The show airs tonight at 6pm with a repeat tomorrow morning at 4pm. This is a massive moment for Nakhane and African artists in general.
