Lady Zamar has fast-become one of the country’s most formidable dance acts. She has had a string of radio hits and is a staple act at festivals around the country. The star, who’s real name is Yamikan Janet Banda, was born in Tembisa and has always been a fan of music. She burst onto the scene back in 2011 when she started making music with Junior Taurus and when they released their collaborative album ‘Cotton Candy’ in 2015, it quickly identified with thousands across the country. The album was nominated for a South African Music Award back in 2016. The two decided to go their separate ways and Lady Zamar started experimenting with other artists in the studio. But, it was her performance on Prince Kaybee’s smash hit ‘Charlotte’ that really put her on the map.
Lady Zamar inked a record deal with Universal Music South Africa and immediately started work on her debut album. She released her debut solo single ‘Love Is Blind’ at the end of 2016 and the song became a massive dance hit. The song did incredibly well on radio stations across the country thanks to its crossover appeal and made its way to almost every club or party around the country. South Africa felt the emotion in the song and quickly identified with Lady Zamar and her music. The music video has just under 3 million views on YouTube and will go down in history as one of the star’s biggest singles to date.
While the single was still blazing up the charts around the country, Lady Zamar released her highly-anticipated debut album ‘King Zamar’. The 14-track record was filled with dance bangers which showed off her smooth, silky vocals on top of beautifully produced dance music. The album was incredibly important in the local dance scene and set a benchmark for other acts to reach. The album was a hit with audiences and the star’s hard work was rewarded.
Lady Zamar picked ‘My Baby’ as the follow-up single. Worried that the song may not be accepted as well as ‘Love Is Blind’, the star was nervous to see the reaction people would have to the song being chosen as a single. Luckily, the song became another massive single for the star and became one of the most played songs on local radio in 2017.
Lady Zamar then started collaborating with other artists in the field and dropped hits with the likes of DJ Mshega and Dominic Neill. The star then released a deluxe edition of ‘King Zamar’ towards the end of 2017 which included some brand-new tracks. ‘Collide’ was chosen as the next single off the album and, again, became a massive hit around the country. The song solidified Lady Zamar’s status as local dance royalty. ‘Collide’ was an obvious choice. The song has been a fan-favourite since Lady Zamar dropped her debut album and showed off a different side of Lady Zamar’s artistry and voice. The song has had over 7.6 million streams on YouTube alone and has become one of the star’s career-defining releases.
Again, the pressure to release a follow-up single was great and the star ultimately chose ‘It’s You – Dreaming’ as the next single off the project. The song was released just a few short weeks ago and, again, the star pushes herself creatively. The song is sung in a much lower register and the emotional lyrical content has helped bring the track closer to home for millions of people.
The hard work had finally paid off when the star took home the ‘Best Dance Album’ at the 2018 South African Music Awards. Lady Zamar was nominated for four awards that evening and her hard work and impact she has had on the local music space had finally been recognised.
This is only the first chapter in Lady Zamar’s incredible career and we’re excited to see what she has in store in the future. We can’t wait for the ride and we will be supporting her every step of the way.
