Yesterday, the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event took place at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Over 80 000 people rocked up at the stadium after earning their tickets through taking action to raise awareness about extreme poverty. A huge amount of A-List celebrities attended and performed at the festival alongside key gamechangers who delivered important and informative speeches to educate the world about the massive inequality we face while also paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.

These are my top seven moments from the festival:

7) Sho Madjozi Proving She Is A True Star

Sho Madjozi continues to wow fans with her eclectic approach to music and looked right at home on the massive stadium stage at the Global Citizen festival. While her backing vocals were way too high for our liking, the star gave her all during that performance. The crowd went wild when the star performed hits like ‘Wakanda Forever’ and ‘Huku’ and her performance proved that he has a bright future ahead of her.

6) Eddie Vedder Covering ‘Imagine’

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder has a massive amount of local fans and the star gave a stellar performance at the Global Citizen Festival. However, the highlight of his 20-minute set was his cover of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ which really tugged at the heartstrings. The song has a massive emotional and political background and was it was the perfect song to cover during his set.

5) Trevor Noah And The Other Impressive Hosts

Getting Trevor Noah to host the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 was an incredibly smart move. He is a fantastic and charismatic host and held his own throughout the day. His knowledge about the poverty in South Africa made his links relatable while his professionalism ensured that the festival and it’s changes were slick and effortless. Other guest hosts like Bonang Matheba, Anele, Nomzamo Mbatha, Gayle King, Danai Gurira, Naomi Campbell also did a great job enlightening, educating and entertaining viewers.

4) Ed Sheeran Got Us In The Mood For His 2019 Tour

Ed Sheeran gave his first-ever South African performance at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 and while the set was only five songs, the star gave fans a taste of what they can expect during the Divide World Tour which descends in South Africa in March next year. He wowed fans with a beautiful performance of ‘Thinking Out Loud’ while also playing his debut single ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’, ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Bloodstream’ and the popular ‘Shape Of You’.

3) Cassper Nyovest Left His Heart On The Stage

After filling up Moses Mabhida stadium on Saturday night, Cassper did it again the very next day at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100. The star has a ton of fans and the excitement when he got on stage was unlike anything we’ve seen before. The crowd went wild for tracks like ‘Tito Mboweni’ and ‘Doc Shebeleza’ but it was ‘Timbuktu’, his collaboration with Chris Martin and special guest Stormzy which was the highlight of his set.

2) Oprah’s Moving Speech

No one delivers a keynote speech much like Oprah Winfrey. The audience went wild when Mama O appeared on stage for a special address where she spoke about her friendship with Madiba and his legacy, the importance of education and basic human needs and eradicating poverty in South Africa. However, her greatest lesson was that the power of one influences the power of many. Oprah inspired audiences to be the change they want to see in the world and encouraged fans to go out and make the world a better place in what was both a heartfelt and moving speech.

1) Beyoncé And Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’ Duet

The energy in the FNB Stadium when Beyoncé and Jay-Z took to the stage was unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Local audiences have been waiting a very long time to watch the stars live in South Africa and gave a two-hour performance where they performed hits like ‘Crazy In Love’, ’03 Bonnie & Clyde’, ‘New York State Of Mind’, ‘N*ggas In Paris’, ‘Formation’, ‘Drunk In Love’, ‘Halo’ and many more. However, it was Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran’s moving performance of ‘Perfect’ which was the highlight of the day. This was the first time the duo have ever performed the song live together – and they didn’t disappoint.
