Ariana Grande is undoubtedly the biggest name in pop music today. After releasing her impressive fourth studio album ‘Sweetener’ in August last year, Ariana’s life went into turmoil as she and fiancé Pete Davidson had a very public split. This inspired a brand-new record for the star who poured her emotion into song. This therapy spawned the massive hit ‘thank u, next’ – Ariana’s ode to her exes and just five months later, the star dropped her fifth studio album, also titled ‘thank u, next’ to rave reviews.
The album was met with incredibly positive reviews from both fans and critics and has since become Ariana’s most iconic record to date. Less than 24 hours after it’s release, thank u, next officially become the number one global pop album debut on Apple Music ever. The lead single also became the fastest song in Spotify history to pass 100 million streams. The single also broke Spotify’s global, single-day streaming record for a female artist by earning nearly 8.2 million streams, followed by 8.5 million the following day.
Meanwhile, the project’s follow-up single ‘7 Rings’ racked up 14,966,544 streams on Spotify within 24 hours of its debut breaking Spotify’s 24-hour stream record. Ariana’s third single off the album ‘break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored’ also became a massive hit for the star.
However, Ariana’s incredible streak didn’t end there. Ariana’s new project also had a massive impact on the UK music market. The album broke the UK record for most album streams ever by a female artist in a week surpassing her own record set by Sweetener in August of 2018, Ariana the first female artist in history to replace herself at #1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, became the first female artist to have 3 singles concurrently in the Top 10 of the UK Official Singles Chart as a lead artist since Ruby Murray in 1955 and finally, joined Elvis Presley, John Lennon, and Justin Bieber as the only artists ever to score 3 #1 singles in under 100 days in the UK.
In the USA, Ariana Grande also managed to achieve a massive feat which no other act has achieved since The Beatles back in 1964. This week, Ariana claims the top three positions on the Billboard Hot 100 chart where ‘7 Rings’ reigns for a fourth week, ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ debuts at No. 2 and ‘Thank U, Next’ rebounds to No. 3. Ariana is just the second act in the Hot 100’s 60-year history to monopolize the top three in a week. The Beatles earned the honour for five weeks in March and April 1964 with “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Twist and Shout” and “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” respectively, even claiming the entire top five on the April 4, 1964-dated chart.
Ariana has proven that opening up through music is something that identifies with millions of audiences and her eclectic approach to music has cemented her as one of the greatest musicians of our time.
