It’s been close to four weeks since DJ Fresh, real name Thato Sikwane, has unscheduled off Metro FM after a BCCSA complaint against the DJ’s “unfortunate choice of words said on air” rocked the SABC. There has been radio silence around the star’s return which even prompted the hashtag #BringBackDJFresh to trend.

The SABC suspended the DJ for two weeks but has requested an additional three-weeks to the suspension despite the fact that he had agreed to apologise for the incident. Now, in a new statement, the radio DJ has revealed that he is also confused about when he is expected to return.

“The impasse between DJ Fresh and the SABC when the national broadcaster requested in addition to the two weeks Fresh was off air, the public apology which he agreed to do; he must remain off air for an additional three weeks and will restart work on Monday 15 July 2019,” a statement released via Fresh’s PR team says. “While my choice of words has not always been correct, I speak from the heart and keep it authentic. I want to be back on air but don’t know when that will be.”

He adds that his suspension without pay is “punitive” and that no pay for that period was punishment enough. “I have been working on the radio since 1992, and my passion for it has grown by the day. I have formed bonds with listeners and have loved watching my career grow. While I have had memorable moments on air, I have also had mishaps. I am passionate about what I do.”
