Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage is in the headlines this morning as she took to her Twitter page to announce that she is pulling out of her scheduled performance at the upcoming DStv Delicious Festival later this month after the string of xenophobic attacks which have taken place around South Africa over the past few days.
“I refuse to watch the barbaric butchering of my people in SA. This is SICK. For this reason, I will NOT be performing at the upcoming DSTV delicious Festival in Johannesburg on 21 September. My prayers are with all the victims and families affected by this,” the star tweeted earlier this morning.
Tiwa is referring to the xenophobic attacks which started in Jeppestown over the weekend and subsequently spread to Alexandra, Tembisa, Germiston, Kempton Park, Coronation Park, Turffontein and Malvern in which five people have reportedly been killed so far.
However, Tiwa is not the only Nigerian superstar taking a stand. Burna Boy also took to Twitter to reveal that he has negative feelings towards South Africa over the way the country treats its foreign nationals. “Watching the killing of my people in South Africa the same way we have all watched it happen a few times in the past. I personally have had my own xenophobic experiences at the hands of South Africans and because of that I have not set foot in SA since 2017. And I will NOT EVER go to South Africa again for any reason until the SOUTH AFRICAN government wakes the f*ck up and really performs a miracle because I don’t know how they can even possibly fix this,” he tweeted.
Burna Boy is expected to perform at Johannesburg’s Afropunk festival on New Year’s Eve and it is currently unclear if his performance will go ahead as scheduled.
