October has been an incredible month for rising star Ami Faku. Last week, her debut album ‘Imali’ made its debut at the top of the South African iTunes charts and now, Apple Music has announced that they’re spotlighting Ami Faku for the whole month of October as their Apple Music New Artist Spotlight for this month.
The prestigious feature will see Eastern Cape’s South African musician with a notable voice get prime placement of editorial support across Apple Music’s ecosystem as a “Hero artist” with inclusion on key charts and music playlists.
Naturally, Ami Faku is thrilled at being bestowed this honour by the streaming giant. “Thank you to the Apple Music team for the phenomenal support since the release of my first single, ‘Ndikhethe Wena’. It’s such an honour to be profiled as the Apple Music New Artist Spotlight for October to coincide with the release of my debut album, ‘Imali’,” shares Ami Faku.
She adds that “I am beyond grateful and in disbelief. The support from Apple Music is priceless and I could never thank them enough. My supporters can expect beautiful music. I am myself all the time, so my music is very honest. I hope people can learn to be true to who they are because there’s so much beauty in that.”
Born and raised in the Eastern Cape Ami first discovered her passion for singing as a child in the church where her father was a pastor. She began to absorb and explore a vast range of styles, from gospel to reggae, pop and hip-hop, gradually developing her own unique approach and distinctive voice with a desire to incorporate her Xhosa heritage. Today she would define her own genre of music as Modern Afro Soul.
Though in her own words her journey thus far has been “exhausting but rewarding”, 2018 was a defining year for her artistic growth which included being featured on three Top 40 singles, all in the space of a month : DJ Qness featuring NaakMusiQ ‘sBabuyile’, The Kiffness’ ‘Lose You’ and DJ Mogul SA’s ‘Ungowam’.
She has built on that success in 2019, starting with two singles, ‘Ndikhethe Wena’ and ‘Ungowam’ hitting the Top 40 chart simultaneously on Metro FM. This was followed by her track ‘Ubuhle Bakho’ being featured on the popular local TV show Uzalo. Going from strength to strength she has since had five of her own tracks appear on the Top 100 RAMS Radio chart, namely: ‘Into Ingawe’, ‘Ungowam’, ‘Ubuhle Bakho’, ‘Ndikhethe Wena’, and ‘Love Drunk’.
The track ‘Into Ingawe’ was produced in collaboration with Sun El Musician and remains one of the most listened to songs on SA radio, after reaching over one million streams within three weeks of its release. Ami has what it takes to achieve great success: charisma, honesty, song-writing precision and the voice of an earth-bound angel.
