Her soothing voices graces the airwaves every weeknight between 19h00 and 22h00 on Jacaranda FM and has fast become one of the station’s most prominent personalities. We catch up with this strong, opinionated woman as she opens up about her radio career and what else she gets up to when not in the radio booth.
Love Songs with Danny Painter is such a popular show on Jacaranda FM. Why do you think so many people identify with the show?
Love Songs With Danny Painter is popular because it’s all about love, motivation and human connection. If you look around you’ll see people are curating their social media, what they watch and read towards more positive content and that is exactly what my show is. Positive, loving and connected. We are a family and its ‘our’ show as opposed to my show.
Where did your passion for radio begin?
Funnily enough, I never wanted to be on radio! I was a kids TV presenter and actor for a big part of my life and at a wrap party for a show I had done, Elana Afrika Brednekamp said two things I will never forget “don’t braid your hair like that again” and “you should really consider radio”. Having worked with her during our shoot and seeing how she was able to connect with people on her radio show, the seed was planted and I actively started pursuing it a few years later. I have also never corn-rowed my hair again!
Why do you think radio is still such a popular medium globally and in South Africa today?
Radio connects you personally to the person speaking to you. It’s you and them. They are in your house, your car, with you during the bad days and the good days. I have always felt very connected to the people I have listened to and you find yourself thinking of them as a trusted friend. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or how much you have, you can connect with that person. Barney Simon got me through many scary nights of boarding school! I only hope I can be that for one person!
You started out as a kids TV presenter. What important life lessons did you learn being so young on TV?
That money will go. Fashion will change and people will forget about you. You need to carve out a life that YOU love wholeheartedly no matter what your career path is. If you become who you are because of your job, you will never be whole or happy. Your job is a small piece of you, you could lose it at any time and it doesn’t define you.
What else do you get up to when your mic is switched off?
I am a bit of a hustler, I realised very quickly that tv and radio won’t last forever and that I needed something solid to fall back on. I am currently in between two “hustles” and launching a very cool online something very soon 🙂 I am always busy! In my down time I read, a lot! I read three books at a time and I will read everything from fiction to physics textbooks! I also love weightlifting, it calms my mind and I do it instead of meditation!
Who are your favourite local and international artists right now?
There. Are. So. Many! But I’ll keep the list short! Locally I LOVE Jo Black, PHFat and any Gqom! Any! Internationally I can’t stop playing Dermot Kennedy ‘Lost’ and Jeremy Renner. But, also Dennis Lloyd and Mike Posner. I can never tell you why I love a song, I just feel the lyrics or the music and it’s in there for ever! And ever!
Besides radio, what else can fans expect from you in 2020?
2020 is FAR away! 2019 is still going to be a beautiful year! I have some plans to get back in front of the camera, but we are currently in discussion, holding fingers and toes that it goes well! I’m also very excited to launch my ‘online something’ -it really speaks to my love of home and fashion! But, that’s all I can say for now!
