He’s one of the biggest acts in the Afrikaans music space right now and this year, Jo Black released his highly-anticipated second studio album ‘Voel Jy Die Genade’ – an album which reached gold status in just 10 days. This week, we get up close and personal with the rocker as he opens up on his new album, successful career and what the future holds.

Your debut album ‘Skepe’ was a massive hit here in South Africa. Why do you think so many people around the country identified with the music you made on the album?

I think people related to the honesty in the music. I tried to be as open and honest as I can in my music and I think that people can see that in the music. It’s something I am really proud of.

You released your follow-up album ‘Voel Jy Die Genade’ earlier this year. Did you find that there was pressure to top your debut album?

Absolutely! There was no expectations on the first album. But, as soon as your first album hits number one, your fans are expecting the second one to either match it in terms of quality or top it. I wanted this album to be even more iconic and I am really happy with the outcome.

What stories do you want to tell when it comes to creating music?

Storytelling is so important in music and, for me, I wanted to tell stories that people can adapt into their own lives. Something relatable. Music has the ability to change lives and if music doesn’t move you, it never fulfilled its purpose. I want to tell music with purpose.

Your new album achieved gold status in just 10 days. How does it feel seeing your work received so well by the general public?

It is a great relief once people start buying your album. It shows that people have connected with your new material. It is also a humbling experience to know that your music is reaching so many different people. I am so honoured that people like my music.

What do the next few months have in store for you?

We are busy bringing the new music to people around the country. I am doing a lot of shows over the next few months so I hope to see you all there!
